Earwigs Facts & Treatment Options
Earwigs are nocturnal and like to inhabit small crevices and moist areas, such as fallen logs and bark. They feed on plant and animal matter. To provide protection against predators, certain species of earwigs can squirt a foul-smelling, yellow liquid from scent glands in the abdomen. It is able to use its pincers in defense while aiming the discharge.
What You Can Do
Treatment Options for Earwigs
Check to make sure gutters and downspouts are clear and properly draining away from the house to prevent moisture build up that might attract earwigs. Seal and cracks and crevices around the foundation of your home. Check doors and windows and even attic and foundation vents for leaks, gaps, or tears in screens. Specific essential oils have scents that earwigs dislike. Some of the best scents to keep earwigs away include peppermint, eucalyptus, cinnamon and basil. In order to distribute these scents throughout your house, simply put a few drops of essential oil into some water to dilute it.
