There are a few types of crickets in Arizona that you should be on the lookout for:
- The house cricket (Achetea domesticus)
- The Tropical House Cricket (Gryllodes supplicans)
- The Field Cricket (Gryllus spp)
Controlling crickets inside and outside your home is important for keeping other dangerous pests out. Scorpions and spiders prey on crickets and the better control you have over the crickets, the better your chances are of not seeing other pests in your home. There are a few things that you can do yourself to minimize crickets in addition to calling Affordable Pest Control for your routine pest control.
1. Seal Openings
This is a common recommendation for keeping any pest out of your home. Sealing openings around doors, windows, garages, sheds, etc. will help keep almost any pest out. Remember, most pests are small and can fit in the tiniest of cracks and crevices. Even newly built homes can have holes large enough for these small pests to fit through.
2. Remove Desirable Homes
This might seem like a no brainer, but we often see piles of “things” that can be homes for all kinds of pests, not just crickets. From cardboard boxes to clothes to toys or shoes, these piles make a wonderful, inviting home for pests like crickets. Where there are crickets, there can be scorpion and spiders, but also ants, termites, and more. Simply removing these piles from your indoor and outdoor spaces will eliminate pests! PS: Don’t forget to clean up any damp towels too. These are a pest fave!
3. Store Trash Properly
Trash should always be properly stored – bagged, tied shut, and in a sealed container. This will help keep pests like crickets at bay, but also keep your home from being a food source for ants, cockroaches, mice/rats, and other pests.
4. Maintain Your Yard
Have you ever walked into a field and seen or heard a whole bunch of crickets? Well, this is one of their favorite environments. By simply mowing your lawn and weeding your yard, you can eliminate crickets around your home. If your yard gets out of control, it can quickly become a haven for bugs.
5. Vacuum Often
If you have noticed crickets around your home, they may have already laid eggs on your rugs and carpets. To prevent the eggs from hatching, vacuum your carpets as soon as you notice them inside your home – and continue to do so frequently. Be sure to empty your vacuum into an outdoor trash can in a sealed bag to ensure they don’t remain inside the home.
